Research description

Developing New Strategies of Flexible Organization and Fast Search of Data in File Systems

We aim by this proposed project at developing an innovative file system model specialized more flexible data organization and search, compared to the traditional file systems. We want to develop for that purpose new approaches to provide the user the possibility of establishing complex file interrelationships and managing efficiently this information to support fast search of files using a natural like query language.

The hierarchical structure of the classical file systems does not provide flexibility of file organisation and search operations, especially for sets of interrelated files. Recently, more projects have tried to enhance the traditional file systems with relational database like capabilities. The resulting systems store and index additional metadata describing file contents and interrelationships into a kernel integrated database. The main problem we have noted about these systems is that they provide access to the enhanced file organisation and searching capabilities only through a new specialised system interface, thus not being compatible with the old applications. Moreover, they do not support interrelationships between sets (categories) of files.

We propose a solution to treat both files and file categories as file system elements and provide the user the possibility to establish complex relationships between these elements, expressed as new file properties. The corresponding file system we want to develop will provide the user with multiple different views on this file space and the possibility to perform efficiently complex search operations. It will provide full access to these facilities through a specialised interface using a natural like language, but also through the classical file system interface.
